HOW TO USE EPOXY MOLDS: Black & White Epoxy Resin Tray Tutorial!
https://youtu.be/-ahPANcphbE
Here we have my mold already. This is a tree mold, a silicone mold. I'm pouring in the clear epoxy. I already have it mixed up and colors in it, but we're going to put some of the clear epoxy, not filling the whole thing, spread it out randomly, and I have my edges painted on my mold already. I used gold mica powder, mixed it with alcohol, and painted it on the edges.
It helps release the mold and gives you a bit of gold that comes into the middle, like around the edges. It blends in and looks cool, but it only sometimes works. I did order a mold release spray then I'm adding some white this is a very, very light cloudy white. I put a small amount of pigment paste in there. If you want it see-through, I'm adding a few clear spots.
It's going to give it a lot of different depth and dimension when you add clear in there and separate that white, and I'm adding it randomly. There's no real rhyme or reason. It's wherever I feel like putting things, then I'm taking some black, and this is a black dye in the epoxy. I did two drops in this little amount. Still, I wanted a little more see-through. Instead of pigment paste, you'll see it has where you can see through it a little bit. That would look cool for a tray like this, and less is more with this thing. There have been times when I try to do many colors and try to blend out all these cool things and end up looking messy and not good.
I think I'm trying to make it simpler and using a lot of, like, black and white and clear and then adding a bit of pop of color here and there or a little gold or like I'm going to use gold flake in a minute. Still, when you do more simple things and look more accurate and beautiful, you can see that gold is starting to seep in on the edges. Sometimes I think that looks cool, and other times I'm like, I don't want gold, but for this one, it looked cool. So now I'm adding the clear with the gold flake, again spreading it out randomly.
Then we're taking a torch and moving everything around, blending things gives it a lot more like natural Looking shapes in there. I wouldn't say I like it moving everything around and making it look a little more realistic and random, move things around as you want. It helps to pop the bubbles, which we're going to torch too, but any heat will help pop bubbles, moving everything around the blending things but not making it all blend and b1 color. It's keeping everything separate and incorporating a little bit here and there. Then there were some chunks of the gold flake that I had to get out.
I took those out. We're going to torch it to get out all the little bubbles in there, and also, we're going to spray alcohol on it. Alcohol reacts with all the colors in the epoxy and moves everything, and makes these cool little pockets and spots almost, giving it a lot of different textures within the colors.
It makes it look cool, then 10 to 20 minutes later, depending on the epoxy. I waited too long. It almost didn't work, but you want to set it in your handles. These are whatever handles you enjoy. I don't know what you call that, but I like something for it to sit up.
When you take it out of the molds, you have your beautiful tray, which already has gold edges because we painted it before. I wanted to show you guys how cool it looks, and see-through gives you that natural stone look.
